Indian charity dispatches artificial limbs to Trinidad & Tobago following PM Modi announcement
Washington DC [US], July 15 (ANI): An Indian charity organisation has verified that it has shipped artificial limbs to Trinidad and Tobago in accordance with the declaration made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visited the Caribbean state recently. Jaipur Foot USA, acting on behalf of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) said shipments of over 800 artificial limbs material have been shipped to assist a humanitarian camp in Trinidad and Tobago.
The project was declared by PM Modi in his speech at the joint sitting of the Trinidad & Tobago Parliament, and organisers say it was a historic moment in bilateral relations.
According to the statement of the organisation, 8-10 technical experts of BMVSS will be delegated to Trinidad and Tobago to organise the artificial limb fitting camp.
Its founder, D.R. Mehta, the winner of Padma Bhushan - one of the highest civilian awards in India, is likely to visit the camp himself.
Jaipur foot USA Chairman Prem Bhandari just visited Trinidad to organize the initiative. He complimented the role of the Indian High Commission in helping to bring the project along, especially noting the work of the High Commissioner, Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit.
The camp was arranged with the cooperation of the Indian High Commission in Trinidad & Tobago and local government. The program represents the wider India humanitarian outreach program in the Caribbean region.
After the parliamentary announcement by Modi, Bhandari said that a number of Jaipur foot USA members have been interested in attending the camp.
The organisation presented the project as an element of the Indian readiness to contribute to global humanitarian service, and referred to the Sanskrit saying Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to the world is one family. Jaipur foot USA operates under BMVSS, a parent organisation that has over the decades been offering artificial limbs and other tools of mobility to the disabled. The charity has a model based on offering free prosthetic limbs to individuals who are unable to afford them.
Organisers say the Trinidad and Tobago camp will reintroduce mobility to hundreds of recipients, and they describe the camp as enhancing the relationship between India and the Caribbean state.
The project is included in Modi larger diplomatic possession towards the Caribbean states with focus on the role of India in South-South collaboration and humanitarian support. (ANI)
